🎯 Module 4: Routines & Mental Preparation

Habit loop, pre-market ritual and mental preparation for consistent trading

1. Routines & Mental Preparation

4.1 Why Routines Work — The Habit Loop

Charles Duhigg describes the Habit Loop in The Power of Habit (2012): cue (trigger) → routine (behavior) → reward. Once a routine is established, the brain massively reduces its cognitive effort — the routine runs on "autopilot."

Roy Baumeister (Willpower, 2011) showed: willpower is a finite resource (ego depletion). The more decisions you have made during the day, the worse afternoon trading decisions become. Routines protect you because they preserve your decision budget.

4.2 The Professional Trader's Morning Routine

TimeActivityGoal
−60 minNo trading content — coffee, exercise, breakfastReduce cortisol naturally
−30 minCheck economic calendar: earnings, Fed, economic dataAvoid surprises
−15 minOpen positions: stops up to date? Levels still valid? No rushing at market open
−5 minEmotion Tracker: am I ready? Daily limit in mind?Go/no-go decision

4.3 Pre-Market Checklist

  • Economic calendar: no unexpected high-risk events today?
  • Overnight gaps: anything changed for open positions?
  • Technical levels: S/R zones identified for today?
  • Context: what market phase are we in? (trend / consolidation / reversal)
  • Emotional state: am I in the green zone of the Emotion Tracker?
  • Daily loss limit: at __% loss I stop trading today
  • No external distractions: phone on silent, no meetings during trading

4.4 After-Hours Debrief

The most honest five minutes of your trading day. This is where the trader who only trades separates from the trader who grows — daily reflection is the invisible compounding formula of your performance.

📓

All trades documented in the journal?

No trade may stay unlogged overnight — what you do not record, you cannot evaluate.

⚖️

Was I rule-compliant — yes/no, and why?

Process over outcome: even a profit from breaking rules counts as a bad trade.

🏆

My best and worst trade today — why?

Do not measure by P&L, but by execution, timing, and setup quality.

🎯

One concrete lesson for tomorrow

Just one — specific, measurable, immediately actionable. No vague resolutions.

Note your emotional state at the end of trading

Your emotional imprint today shapes tomorrow's decisions. Rate from 1 (exhausted / frustrated) to 5 (clear / centered) — and connect the score to tomorrow's trading behavior.

FactorStudyRelevance for Trading
SleepWalker (2017): <7h sleep → risk appetite +60%, impulse control −40%Poor sleep = poor stop-loss discipline
Aerobic exerciseHillman (2008): 20 min running improves executive function for 2–4hMorning training improves analytical thinking
Blood sugarBaumeister (2011): low glucose impairs self-controlEat before trading — no trading on an empty stomach after high activity

💡 The most successful traders Brett Steenbarger coached all had one thing in common: they treated their physical condition as part of their trading routine — not as an optional extra.
