⚠️ Risco, subjetividade & crítica

Disciplina de contagem alternativa, Hindsight-Bias vs. contagem em tempo real, Confirmation-Bias, filtros de confirmação e limites do método.

1. 📄 Disciplina de contagem alternativa

The most important risk-management tool for Elliott Wave traders is alternate count discipline: always have at least two valid wave scenarios ready — a primary count and an alternate count, with clearly defined invalidation levels for each scenario.

ScenarioConditionInvalidation level
Primary countMost likely scenario (e.g. we are in Wave 3 up)Break below the Wave-2 low
Alternate countSecond-most likely scenario (e.g. Wave 4 still in progress)Break above the Wave-3 high (if we expect a flat)

💡 Note both scenarios in your trading journal before the trade. This forces clear decisions instead of spontaneous reactions.

2. 🕰️ Hindsight-Bias: A maior armadilha

Hindsight bias is the most dangerous phenomenon in Elliott Wave analysis. In retrospect, waves can always be drawn "perfectly". Look at any Elliott Wave chart shown online as an example — it was drawn after the fact.

Real-time counting is fundamentally different and harder:

  • Wave 3 looks like Wave 1 in the beginning
  • Wave 4 can look like the end of the entire trend
  • Wave B of an ABC correction feels like a new impulse
  • Diagonals and triangles only become unambiguous in hindsight

Mitigation: Write down your count before entering the trade, including the invalidation level. Only then can you check whether your analysis has real-time quality.

3. 😌 Confirmation-Bias: Apaixonado demais pela contagem

When you have identified a clean 5-wave count, the psychological temptation to stick with it is strong — even when the market signals the opposite. That is confirmation bias.

Typical warning signs of confirmation bias:

  • "This is a Wave 4, not Wave 2" — even though Wave-2 rules are violated
  • "The breakout is a false breakout" — even though there is no technical reason to think so
  • "I'll just wait a little longer" — after the invalidation level has already been broken

⚠️ Rule: When your invalidation level is broken, the count must be abandoned IMMEDIATELY — no discussion, no exceptions. The level is not a suggestion, it is a binary criterion.

4. 📬 Filtros de confirmação

Use external filters to confirm your Elliott Wave counts — never rely on the wave structure alone:

FilterWhat it showsUse
VolumeWave 3 should have the highest volume; Wave 5 often fallingMandatory for stocks; less reliable for forex/crypto
RSI divergenceWave 5 often shows lower RSI despite higher priceVery valuable for Wave-5 identification
NYSE A/D lineMarket breadth confirms or diverges from the indexFor US stock-market counts (SPX, DJIA)
Volume profileHigh-volume nodes often at wave endpointsFor confluence with Fibonacci levels

5. 🚫 Quando Elliott Wave não funciona

Honest assessment: there are market conditions in which the Elliott Wave method fails or becomes unreliable:

SituationReasonAlternative
News-driven marketsFed decisions, election outcomes, geopolitics produce gaps and V-bottoms that follow no wave structureStep out of the market before important events or set very wide stops
Penny stocks / low volumeLiquidity too low — individuals can move price, no collective psychologyFundamental analysis or stay away
Timeframes < 15 minutesToo much market noise; wave structures unreliable15 minutes as the minimum; 1h+ preferred
Range-bound markets (low vol)In tight, low-volume sideways phases there are no clear impulsesWait for breakout or use market profile

Complementary methods that combine well with Elliott Wave: Volume Profile (price-level analysis), Market Profile (time-price distribution), market breadth (A/D line, McClellan Oscillator).
