Trading journal comparison: free alternatives to Tradervue, Edgewonk & co.

None of the other journals in this comparison documents an import from Trade Republic or DKB, and only sTraderZ.com has a free plan with a German tax report and options strategy detection. The only other journal app in this comparison with a German interface, Visual Trading Journal, focuses on Interactive Brokers and charges extra for the tax report. To be fair: the international providers support far more international brokers.

Switching: provider by provider

What each provider does well, what it lacks and what happens when you switch to sTraderZ.com.

Tradervue

What it does well: There is a free-forever plan. Interactive Brokers is imported, along with far more international brokers than sTraderZ.com supports. Stocks, options, futures and forex can be analyzed, on the paid plans in EUR too.

What it lacks: No German brokers, no German tax report, and no German interface. The free plan is capped at a fixed number of trades per month. Company seat in the USA, servers in the USA and Canada.

What happens when you switch: You connect your broker or upload its export files, and sTraderZ.com takes over your trades including history, as far as the broker provides it. Tags come along via CSV. Notes and screenshots stay at Tradervue.

TradesViz

What it does well: There is a free-forever plan and a very large number of brokers, including Interactive Brokers, and flatex semi-automatically. Options spreads are detected automatically. The paid plans also cover futures, forex, crypto and CFDs, and reports in EUR are possible.

What it lacks: The free plan covers stocks only and one account. Trade Republic, DKB, comdirect, Consorsbank and ING are missing; flatex and Scalable Capital only work semi-automatically via the Google Drive method. No German tax report, and the interface is English only. Company seat in India, data in the USA.

What happens when you switch: You connect Interactive Brokers directly to sTraderZ.com, flatex trades come in via PDF trade confirmations. Options and options strategy detection are already included in its free plan. Tags come along via CSV, notes and screenshots stay at TradesViz.

Edgewonk

What it does well: Edgewonk is based in Germany. Many brokers including Interactive Brokers are imported, and asset classes range from forex and stocks to commodities.

What it lacks: There is no free plan. No German brokers, no German tax report, and no German interface. Data is held by a service provider in various countries.

What happens when you switch: With sTraderZ.com you start for free and stay with a provider based and hosted in Germany. Trades come in fresh from your broker, tags come along via CSV. Notes and screenshots stay at Edgewonk.

Visual Trading Journal

What it does well: The interface is in German and the provider is based in Germany. Interactive Brokers is connected via Flex Queries, also through introducing brokers such as CapTrader and Lynx. Besides stocks, options, futures and forex, warrants and bonds can be tracked, analysis in EUR is possible, and option sellers get dedicated features such as a worst-case simulation of tied-up capital. A German tax report and bookkeeping for a GmbH are available as add-on products (Visual Steuer, Visual Wertpapierverbuchung).

What it lacks: There is no free plan, only a 14-day trial that requires payment details. Trade Republic, DKB and flatex are not mentioned. The tax report costs extra, and no language other than German is mentioned. Regular automatic import is only available from the Pro edition; in the Standard edition you trigger the import manually. The website does not state where the servers are.

What happens when you switch: At sTraderZ.com you start for free, and the German tax report is included in the free plan. You connect Interactive Brokers directly, and your trades come fresh from the broker. Tags come along via CSV, notes and screenshots stay with Visual Trading Journal.

TraderSync

What it does well: Options spreads are detected automatically in all plans. Asset classes range from stocks and options to CFDs and indices, and every plan can be tried for seven days.

What it lacks: There is no free plan. No German tax report, and no German interface. German broker support could not be verified on the provider’s site, and its privacy policy names neither a company seat nor a server location.

What happens when you switch: sTraderZ.com also detects options strategies automatically, already in the free plan. Trades come in fresh from your broker, tags come along via CSV. Notes and screenshots stay at TraderSync.

TradeZella

What it does well: Many brokers are imported, including Interactive Brokers. Stocks, options, futures, forex and crypto can be analyzed, and amounts can be displayed in EUR.

What it lacks: There is no free plan. No German brokers, no German tax report, and no German interface. The website states neither a company seat nor a data location.

What happens when you switch: With sTraderZ.com you start for free. Trades come in fresh from your broker, tags come along via CSV. Notes and screenshots stay at TradeZella.

StonkJournal

What it does well: The free plan has no limit on trades or accounts. Options strategies are detected even in the free plan.

What it lacks: The free plan has no import, every trade is entered by hand. Even on the paid plan trades only come in via CSV, without a direct broker connection. No German brokers, no German tax report, and no German interface. Company seat in the USA.

What happens when you switch: With sTraderZ.com your trades come in via broker connection or file import instead of being typed in by hand, and options strategies are detected as well. Tags come along via CSV, notes stay at StonkJournal.

Excel template

What it does well: Free, without limits, in any language and for any asset class. Your data stays local, and you build the analysis exactly the way you want it.

What it lacks: There is no import: every trade is typed in by hand. You have to work out options strategies, partial fills and foreign currencies yourself, and there is no tax report.

What happens when you switch: sTraderZ.com fetches your trades fresh from your broker, you do not need the spreadsheet for that. Tags from the spreadsheet come along via CSV with the columns Symbol, Opened and Tags.

Moving over: what happens to my existing trades?

sTraderZ.com has no tool that takes over another provider’s complete journal. This is how you still move over with little effort:

  • Your trades come in fresh from your broker, including history, as far as the broker provides it.
  • Tags and strategies come along via CSV with the columns Symbol, Opened and Tags. Rename the columns of your export if needed.
  • Import your trades from the broker first, then the tags: the import only assigns tags to trades that already exist.
  • Notes and screenshots are not carried over.

New to this? What a trading journal does and what matters when choosing one

A trading journal records what you traded and why. Only then can you see which strategies really make money, where you break your rules and which mistakes keep repeating.

A spreadsheet is enough to start and costs nothing, but every trade has to be typed in by hand. Journal software fetches the trades from your broker and calculates the metrics itself. These criteria help you choose:

  • Import: do trades come in automatically from your broker?
  • Metrics: do you see win rate, profit factor and profit per strategy?
  • Options: are spreads and other strategies detected from the individual legs?
  • Taxes: does the journal help with the tax return in your country?
  • Privacy: where is the provider based, and where is your data stored?
